- In a forest, the first thing you notice is the trees. They are big and old and beautiful, or gnarled and twisted and ugly. They are tall, or squat, or wide in the middle. There may be hundreds of them or thousands. The next thing you notice is the undergrowth: bushes and vines and grasses, growing in clumps between the trees.
