The slaves are pitched against each other by being made to hold weights out in front of them. The slaves must count together and any mistakes mean they must both start again. Neither slave wants to be the one to cause the other more discomfort but even this incentive isn't enough for 63 who is now struggling with its fitness. The cracking of the whip being the sluts may also have something to do with their inability to count or concentrate.
